Posted on May 5, 2019 by in Nature, Outings, Wildflowers

Set in farmland, the front door was only about four metres away from Roydon Woods Nature Reserve Although there was no direct access to the Wildlife Trust site, it […]

    Spotting wildflowers out walking

Posted on November 24, 2018 by in Nature, Walks, Wildflowers

Tide Mills – a lovely spot for photographing wildflowers

Posted on September 13, 2015 by in Nature, Walks

Spotting wildflowers on a local walk Tide Mills is the site of a ruined village in a historic coastal area between Seaford and Newhaven, which is popular with walkers. There were plenty of wildflowers to be seen when I visited in August. After parking off the A259, the path skirts a couple of fields as […]

Mike makes elderflower champagne most years What I love about elderflower champagne is the fresh floral taste, and feeling of a midsummer treat! Making elderflower champagne Picking elderflowers The elder tree, Sambucus nigra, is very common in the UK and flowers late May into early June here in the South East. Our elderflower champagne recipe […]

┬áIt’s been a while… …as the power ballad goes…but I’ve still been out and about in the Sussex countryside photographing wildflowers! May is Cow Parsley time We often find round here that greenish-yellow alexanders and deep blue alkanet are in flower at the beginning of the month, with cow parsley filling in towards the end. […]

    Bellis perennis | Daisy

Posted on February 2, 2014 by in Wildflowers

Daisy flowers have many names This common white flower with an iconic yellow centre is known common daisy, lawn daisy, English daisy and bruisewort. I hear that historically it was traditional to mash up flowers & apply to broken veins in face to improve complexion. I have no idea whether this has any modern validity! […]

    Stellaria holostea | Greater stitchwort

Posted on February 2, 2014 by in Wildflowers

Stitchwort – a tiny white flower This tiny white flower with pretty orange anthers is common in Sussex, to the extent that I wasn’t going to photograph it until my daughter insisted. The flowers are about 2cm across, and we found the one photographed below in an open area, growing alongside a concreted footpath. Stitchwort […]
