Wildflower spotting in spring 2024
This is my second year of taking part in the Wildflower Society diary. As a newbie I have to stick to a set list of common wildflowers, and record them on a spreadsheet when I find them, along with the place, date and grid reference if possible. Last year I managed about 240 altogether including flowers spotted on various weekends away and trips in the campervan. Next year I’m hoping to be able to qualify to go free range and list anything I see in the UK as long as it’s growing wild, including self-seeded garden escapes.
Spring blooms in Seaford January to early May
On my walks around town, I tend to find lots of wildflowers growing in the pavement and verges.
In February I found: Daisy, Dandelion, Groundsel, Winter Heliotrope, Ivy leafed Toadflax, Annual Dog Mercury, Celandine, Red Dead Nettle and Sweet Violet.
In March: Three Cornered Garlic, Wavy Bittercress, Wall Rocket, Common Field Speedwell and Hairy Speedwell.
April: Lords and Ladies (see top image), Red Valerian, Pellitory of the Wall, Cleavers, Bulbous Buttercup, Musk Stork’s-bill and Common Stork’s-bill, and Yellow Corydalis amongst others.
May: It’s early days but I spotted Field Madder this morning which I was quite chuffed to find on a pavement in a town!
I’ll be back with an update in a couple of months! See early summer diary
