Primroses grow en masse along the country lanes of Sussex, especially on grassy roadside banks near Battle. Thirty years ago, back when it was OK to pick wildflowers, my husband used to pick a posy for his Mum to celebrate Mothers Day. I am writing this a week before Mothers Day, and I can confirm that they are flowering in profusion in the same area!
The pretty yellow flowers are up to 3cm across in a delicate pale yellow with darker centre. In the language of flowers they represent either young love (presumably because they flower early in the year), or the sentiment “I can’t live without you”.
